It comes with no surprise. Twilight fans conjured everything they could and that paid off. In US Box Office, the third Twilight Saga, Eclipse has set a box office record for the biggest midnight opening - eclipsing The Twilight Saga: New Moon's $26.3 million take. Eclipse raked in $30 million on a single night, with box office receipts coming from more than 4,000 screens nationwide. The figure also includes $1 million record from IMAX theaters.
The opening record is really shattering. Not only Eclipse has made $30 million in one night, but also made an unprecedented appearance on 4,416 locations on Wednesday, smashing opening theaters record hold by Iron Man 2 few weeks ago with 4,380 theater counts. New Moon raked up $72.7 million on its Friday debut (including the $26.3 million midnight start) and rocked up $178.9 million on the first sixth days. However, New Moon burnt out quickly and settled for a final gross of $296.6 million. I would expect Eclipse to lean closer to this kind of statistics.
Summit Entertainment initially estimated $170 million start over the Fourth Of July Holiday, while BoxOffice.com predicted a total of $181 million until Sunday (5 days start). BoxOfficeGuru meanwhile held an estimation of $175 million for the same period. Eclipse is seen as the best film in the series so far, holding up well at 50% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The weekend is still long so we will see how much Eclipse is going to take out of the business.
