We have see this coming. At the US Box Office, Wimpy Kid knocks out Zack Snyder's fantasy action Sucker Punch leaving the latter totally sucked and punched right on its face. In a surprising estimated number, the sequel to the last year's Wimpy Kid drew 5 million bucks more than the anticipated affair, confirming all the suspicious box office activities that have been rumored all this week. It is also worthy to note that both movies were harshly welcomed by the movie critics but the Wimpy Kid has something like a 10-percent upper hand.
20th Century Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules taped in an estimated US$ 24.4 million over the weekend, which is better figure itself than the first movie about 53 weeks ago. 2010's Diary of a Wimpy Kid grossed US$ 22.1 million on its way to a final US$ 64 million. According to Box Office Mojo, 20th Century Fox's exit polling indicated that 51 percent of Rodrick Rules' audience was male and 59 percent was under 25 years old, which was nearly the same as the first movie. Expect a third movie to be green lighted and we will see something like Saw, coming out every year to cow some little cash.
Sucker Punch is all about styles but lacks a proper substance and it eventually plays like a fanboy affair. The movie is like a video game, challenging audience to a tip of the thin line between fantasy and reality that does not making any senses. In the end, opening in 3,033 locations (including 229 IMAX venues), Sucker Punch only managed a mediocre US$ 19.0 million, arriving on the low-end of industry expectation. It was also director Zack Snyder's worst live-action start yet, following 300, Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead. According to Box Office Mojo, Warner Bros.' research showed that 64 percent of the audience was male and 74 percent was under 35 years old.
