BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG OF GREEN DAY FOR AMERICAN IDIOT

It looks like a film version of Green Day's album "American Idiot" may just inching closer now as Green Day front-man himself might be playing the lead role on the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the adaptation, which is also based on the Broadway musical has been planned for 2013 release. Billie Joe Armstrong will be reprising his Broadway role as St. Jimmy in the movie version as well.

The adaptation is Playtone’s second musical after the blockbuster hit, Mamma Mia!, which grossed over $600 million worldwide. The adaptation will be directed by Michael Mayer who also directed the stage version as well. Dustin Lance Black is given the task to script the film version of American Idiot. Slash Film had that the plot may possibly involving a tale of love and anger acted out through the characters Jesus of Suburbia and St. Jimmy.

Back in 2004, according to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, the album was deliberately created with a plot arc and that some of their inspiration was from sources in the musical theater repertoire like The Rocky Horror Show and West Side Story. Armstrong also said the band intended "that it would be staged or we'd create a film or something... we were thinking in terms that it kind of felt like scoring a movie."

Now it looks like we have one coming up for 2013.
