THE GEOGRAPHY OF “THE HUNGER GAMES”
The nation where “The Hunger Games” is held is known as Panem. Panem is described as “the nation that rose out of what was North America”. The proposed map can find below as there are no official map been used. It consists of 13 districts and a central government seat of The Capitol. Panem roots from the Latin word ‘panem et circenses’ which literally means ‘bread and circuses’.
THE BRIEF HISTORY OF PANEM
Once upon a time, a catastrophic apocalypse struck the whole North America continent. While been unspecified, the global-scale war combined with the effects from the global warming has reshaped the face of America - FOREVER. Since then, the new government of America was installed and now has known as Panem. The central government seats at the Capitol, rules over a vast territory consisting of 13 districts with totalitarian and believing in the concept of "if the Capitol citizens are fed and entertained, they won't question the government". Each of the districts under Panem is required to produce valuable natural resources and to sell them to the central government with food and oil as the return.
Then comes an event about 75 years before this movie’s setting. A civil war erupted within the Panem as all the districts; especially the poor districts rebelled against the tyrant of the Capitol. The rebellion campaign signified what is now known as the “Dark Days”. Unfortunately, the rebellion failed and resulting District 13 to be completely demolished by air-toxic-bombs. Since District 13 was the anchor of the rebellion, the lost of District 13 signified the lost of hope for change thus the white flag was raised.
Over the years, District 2 became the staunchest ally of the Capitol at the end of "Dark Days", eventually becoming the first to fully re-embrace the authority of the Capitol. District 2 along with District 1 and 4 have become the 'pets' of the Capitol, thus are among the wealthiest districts in Panem.
THE HUNGER GAMES: REAPING
Following the crushed rebellion, the Capitol signed a decree to hold "The Hunger Games" - an annual nationally televised event with each district sends one young boy and one young girl, between the ages of 12 and 18 as "The Tributes" to fight in an outdoor arena to the death. Each year, the Capitol forces 24 teenagers to take part in the game to serve both as an entertainment for the Capitol citizens and as a reminder of how each district is completely at the Capitol's mercy. The sole survivor is declared the victor.
Each year, every district holds a reaping ceremony to select "The Tributes". Once a child enters the age of 12, his or her name will be submitted into the reaping ball. Every year, the child's name will be added into the reaping all that when the child is 18 years old (last year of eligibility), a minimum of 7 entries will be in the reaping ball.
However, the child can chooses to add their name more times in exchange for small supply of grain and oil known as a tessera. The tessera proves to be valuable as it will be enough to supply one family member for one year.
