It was only yesterday when Green Tea Movie mentioned that Max Payne-helmer John Moore was offered the directorial job for the fifth John McClane "yippee-ki-yay", currently entitled Die Hard 5. He has not confirmed though. The offer came right after the news that Noam Murro (Smart People), who previously attached to direct, has joined Warner Bros' 300 prequel project instead. Now, 20th century Fox has added three more names into the director potential list, in hope that they will be able to rope in one of them to continue the franchise. Read who's who after the jump.
The original sets in one building but the last round saw McClane racing across the East Coast to stop a frenzy terrorist cell. Well, stopping these peoples seem to be his speciality. In 1988, John Tiernan directed the first Die Hard movie that saw our hero Detective John McClane fights off the East German terrorist in a building in Los Angeles. In 1990, Renny Harlin directed the sequel "Die Harder" that sets in an airport in Washington D.C. Then, 1995's Die Hard with a Vengeance, once again directed by John Tiernan, put McClane on a mission to stop New York's subway bombing. Fast forward to 2007, McClane once again in a mission to stop a cyber-terrorist attack that will threaten the national security. Die Hard 4.0 was directed by Lens Wiseman. Now going into the fifth movie, a new director and new plot expansion are required.
Coming Soon and Deadline reported that 20th Century Fox is eyeing a list of four directors to take on the new job. The list includes Joe Carnish (Attack the Block), Justin Lin (Fast Five), John Moore (Max Payne) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive).
If I am to decide from the list, I would go for either Justin Lin or Nicolas Winding Refn. Lin has demonstrated his capability to deal with realistic, crazy and ridiculous action sequences as you have seen in this summer's Fast Five. Winding Refn is more of an indie guy but his ability to make Drive a must-watch thriller of the year has pushed his style and concept forward with confidence. Joe Cornish would be an interesting candidate but I do not enjoy Attack the Block like anyone does.
As we have mentioned yesterday, Die Hard 5 will set in Russia along with his son. More details are yet to be known on what form of terrorism we will be dealing this time. Bruce Willis is definitely returning for this one but no other casting has been made yet.
