BOX OFFICE NEWS MAY 1, 2011

If this weekend was counted as the beginning of the lucrative summer season, it would have been a big start given the title. Judging by the Hollywood industry standard, this pre-summer weekend was a colossal one. Fast Five opened the summer (technically) with posting two amazing records. With the $83.6 million start from 3,644 locations including 245 IMAX theaters, Fast Five has broken the record for top April openings (a record held by its predecessor Fast & Furious - $70.96 million) and the franchise best. With the huge opening, it more than doubled another flick that sets in Rio de Janeiro – Rio ($39.2 million) to set the year’s highest opening. Reviews for the Rio heist are strong. Universal's research showed that 56 percent of Fast Five's audience was male (about the same as Fast Four), 52 percent was under 25 years old (skewing older than Fast Four), 35 percent white (compared to Fast Four's 28 percent) and 33 percent Hispanic (down from Fast Four's 46 percent).

Three other openers landed soft and dud on the box office market. Walt Disney’s Prom drew only an estimated $5 million from 2,730 locations. The rom-com opened much like BRATZ and Sleepover, with little number to accompany its inert storyline. Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling indicated that a whopping 66 percent of Prom's audience was under 18 years old, and 82 percent was female.

Lionsgate’s animation sequel, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil might be landing itself in dud. Garnering only $4.1 million from 2,505 locations was only a fraction of the first Hoodwinked movie five years ago. The opening was enough to make Hoodwinked Too! as one of the worst opening for 3D titles. Meanwhile, Brandon Routh stars in Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, the story adapted from a popular Italian private investigator of the paranormal faired was even worst, grossing only a mere $885,000 from 875 locations.
