Summit Entertainment has announced (as reported in Coming Soon vis Deadline) that the plan to go for the fourth installment in the ever popular Step Up franchise, "Step Up 4Ever" will now move forward following the signing of MV director Scott Speer. The movie will be shot in 3D just as its predecessor, Step Up 3D.
Speer is replacing Wade Robson, who dropped out of the project recently, citing personal reasons to hold him back from the project. It is understood that Summit Entertainment will be gunning for a summer shooting, provided by scripts from Jenny Mayer and produced by Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman. John Chu, the director for the last two Step Up movies will sit back as executive producer, as he is preparing on the production of "G.I. Joe 2".
Speer is a music video/commercials director who has helmed music videos for Ashley Tisdale, Jordin Sparks, Will.I.Am, Jason Derulo and Orianthi Lacey, and he also collaborated with Chu on the TV episodes The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.
Looking at Speer's resume, I thought he would have been a good choice for the franchise. However, the announcement of the fourth installment makes the story becomes a little cliché and niche because the franchise has becomes routinely based on some street dance battle between two rivals. Unless they have a new story plot then I would game in. Seems unlikely right? Anyway, no tentative release date yet but I suspect it would be late summer next year.
