TRANSFORMERS 3 IS THE BIGGEST OPENER OF 2011

The Transformers franchise is back in the cinemas this week. With the huge opening expected in more than 110 markets this weekend, only the ignorant will think that not any records shall not be broken by the giant robots - at least in the foreign markets. Hit the jump to know how much the giant robots raked from the cinemas worldwide.

In the stateside, the third installment - Dark of the Moon did not come out in full force to break the record set by the predecessor Revenge of the Fallen two years ago. Instead, it raked in $37.3 million on the Wednesday opening day, according to the numbers compiled by Box Office Mojo. Hence, it ranked as the sixth highest opening for Wednesday and the biggest of the year (beating Pirates 4 from May). Two years ago, Revenge of the Fallen raked in $62 million in its first Wednesday debut. Unfortunately, Dark of the Moon suffered the whiplash from the poorly accepted Revenge of the Fallen and some insiders believed that factor, coupling with some other factors like franchise fatigue and the absence of Megan Fox could played some role on the drastic reduction in box office gross.

Out of the $37.3 million, 3D business accounted for almost 60% of the total. The 3D gross fared better than recent 3D movies that generated only 40% of the total. Distributor Paramount Pictures noted research showing that 62 percent of the audience was male and 55 percent was under 25 years old.

Paramount also estimated an opening day foreign take of $32.5M, which is 38% ahead of Transformers 2 for the markets that have opened. The overseas cume with previews is estimated at $36.6M for a global take so far of $79.4M.
