BOX OFFICE NEWS APRIL 3, 2011

Although it received a very harsh rating from Green Tea Movie and basically all over the world's critics, Hop still managed to dig in plenty of chest and en-route to score one of the best opening of the year. Exceeding industrial expectation, the Easter Bunny-themed animation from Universal pictures and Illumination, marketed as being "from the makers of Despicable Me and Alvin and the Chipmunks" certainly bringing in lots of cash cow too. Indeed the two films mentioned were over-achievers too. Hop scored an estimated US$38.1 million opening but it will be interesting to see if the estimate holds to challenge Rango's opening last month.

The well-reviewed sci-fi flick Source Code opened in second place with an estimated US$15 million. The star-power for Source Code is not huge but still attracting. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a a soldier that takes multiple trips back in time in hopes of preventing a train disaster, the movie has earned some of the best reviews of the year. Source Code played to older men with studio research showing that 54% of the audience was male and 64% was over 30.

Opening third, the new market-player FilmDistrict got off with a pleasant start. Its first release, the horror movie Insidious bowed to an estimated US$13.5 million start. Marketed as being "from the makers of Paranormal Activity and Saw" helped it to reach its target audience. Insidious has a soft rating for a horror flick, PG-13 but the reviews were quite good so far.
